HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Healthy lifestyle is part of the H.E.L.P. English program. Students are taught the 8 laws of health for a NEW START in life.

QUIT SMOKING
Over 70% of Indonesian men and boys smoke without really knowing the dangers.

The 'Quit Smoking' program is:
  1. A program for those who want to quit, run by experienced doctor and nurse teams.
  2. A training program for Indonesian medical personnel and school staff to run the program and reach more people.
  3. A shorter program for school students and their families.

A donation of AUS$1 per book to cover printing would put these books into the hands of many young people.

THE ADVENTRES OF JIMMY AND BUDI

Book1: Westerner, Jimmy and Indonesian, Budi, go on adventure of discovery about the dangers of smoking and alcohol.
Book 2: A sequel to Book 1. The two friends unlock the 8 keys to good health.
Both books are colourful and attractive to teenagers.

DENTAL PROGAM

The first program, run in 4 high schools, was a fabulous success. Not one student had ever been to a dentist! After a power point presentation about dental hygiene with practical demonstrations the dental team from 'Fountain in the City', Australia, checked the student's teeth and performed fillings and extraction using a mobile clinic. The students each received a book, toothpaste and toothbrush.

HEALTHY MOTHERS, HAPPY BABIES
Village life can be hard for a pregnant village woman in Indonesia. Marriages take place for girls as young as 12 or 13 and the ensuing pregnancy is dangerous for a young body still growing. Indonesian health departments battle against traditional customs which are detrimental to the mother and baby's health. In cooperation with two clinics a trial program was run by Australian ladies, 2 doulas and a midwife, teaching healthy practices during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

TEACH IT GREEN, KEEP IT CLEAN
Focused on the high schools in which the H.E.L.P. core English program is being taught.
The program includes English lessons about:
  • Biodegradability
  • Recycling
  • Compositing
  • Saving water
  • Waste-free school food and healthy tuck-shop
Students will be engaged in hands on activities including a coloured-coded bins for rubbish disposal, cleaning up in local areas and educating the community in environmental responsibility.
